Taken from letters written by Arkansas patients:

DIABETES -- Subject is a 63-year-old male who for over 58 years has dealt with the ongoing problems involved with his diabetes. He has learned that marijuana serves as a hypoglycemic agent, in that small doses of smoked marijuana lower his blood sugar. The patient uses marijuana when his blood sugar is high, if he is able to obtain a supply of marijuana.

The patient continues a standard insulin regimen, but prefers to also address his medical condition with a controlled diet, exercise, and with other natural approaches so that he can regulate the potentially damaging extremes which can occur with diabetes. He has discussed his use of marijuana for blood sugar control with his physician, who dismissed the information.

The patient is interested in offering his experience to the medical research community in the hope that other diabetics can be served by the information. Marijuana's impact on blood sugar levels is recognized, but he has not been able to discover any research that examines potential therapeutic applications of marijuana or its derivatives for use in diabetics.
