Ad placement decision reconsidered

Fayetteville AR: Please be advised that late yesterday I received a very interesting and very friendly phone call from the Fay'vl Dem-Gaz ad manager, Jim Blankenship. He made a few introductory remarks, first remarking that he had seen something of an email and then observing on our polls and our effort to work toward a change in the law. Then he offered to help us 'revise' our ad so that it will meet their concerns. Evidently they believe that our ad as we wrote it might be construed as supporting and/or advocating illegal use or trafficking.

Late this morning, I received four proposed versions from their ad department via email. Unfortunately, all of them are unacceptable because they specifically state that we want to change the law. We can't advocate for a law change in our ad without violating our 501(c)(3) status as a nonprofit. Our mission with our proposed ad is to educate and promote interest.

After I explained our problem with their proposed ads, Mr. Blankenship asked if he could get with a couple of people and then call me back. Of course I said yes. Further updates will be sent to you as things progress. Thanks to many of you who have sent encouraging comments and/or stated your interest in running some kind of coverage on the situation.

Cooperation produces acceptable ad

Fayetteville AR: Following a flurry of communication between the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and the Arkansas Alliance for Medical Marijuana, a compromise ad design has been developed. The new ad, still a one column by one inch size, will feature the word "Marijuana" in large type, followed by the words "can be a compassionate, common sense medicine." In small type are the Alliance's website address and telephone number. The ad also includes the group's logo.

"I have been surprised and pleased with the effort of the Democrat-Gazette to accommodate our needs," stated Denele Campbell, spokesperson for the campaign. "We would have been happy to place the ad we originally designed, but believe that even with the additional text the new ad is still readable. Our understanding is that the Democrat-Gazette's purpose with the additional text is to clarify the ad message so that readers will not see the ad as advocating illegal use or trafficking."

The original text of the ad, which on Tuesday the Democrat-Gazette refused to run, simply stated "Medical Marijuana. Compassion. Common Sense." Wednesday morning, the Alliance issued a statewide press release regarding the refusal.

"Our purpose is to offer the Arkansas people an opportunity to learn more about the issue by advertising our contact information and our website address. Our website contains extensive medical and scientific research materials, documented patient stories, and provisions of laws that have been passed in nine other states," stated Ms. Campbell. "We're glad the Democrat-Gazette has considered the interests of the Arkansas people in this matter."

Polling conducted by Zogby International in November 2002 showed that 62% of Arkansas voters support a law allowing legal medical use of marijuana.
